Process
Planning sketch#1This was my first planning sketch. I also don't have the distress look that german expressionism has. I felt that it was too simple and doesn't look like a german expressionism inspiration.
|
Planning sketch#2My second try didn't turn out the way I wanted either. However I did try to make it look a german expressionism but I felt that it didn't truly represent my emphasizes on the symbol.
|
planning#3The third one is way better than the first two. I thought outside the box when I looked at my second planning sketch and I thought to put the emphasizes on the symbol I have to make the lines go out.
|
First two trials
My first try for block printing, It looked blurry and didn't turn out the way I hoped. I wanted the symbol to be completely black.
|
My second try wasn't successful either but it doesn't have the blurry look the first one has. I actually really like the sketchy look it has but like I said before I wanted completely black.

Artistic Inspiration
I had a hard time picking what artist/art movement I wanted to connect to my piece. I first started off by thinking about what I wanted my art to represent. As I was thinking about that, I realized that the german expressionism art movement fit my intention the best. I also picked german expressionism because the visuals matched the block printing method. After I picked the art movement, I started to do research on the method, intention and visuals of german expressionism. I quickly got an idea from the german expressionism movement to put into my artwork. I noticed that sketchy lines emphasized a point in the artwork and I also wanted to focus on one part of my artwork. I wanted the emphasizes to be on the symbol so I decided to add sketchy lines on the outside and make the symbol black.

Meaning Of piece
Like I've mentioned before on my exhibition text, the purpose of this art work was to get the Islam symbol noticed more. Most people don't know how it looks and when they see this symbol, they think it's Turkey's flag. It is Turkey's flag, but it also represents a whole religion. So I wanted to people to recognize that the creasant moon and star, is a sign that symbolizes islam. In todays society, the religion islam has become a controversial religion. Due to the fact that terror groups like ISIS and Osama Bin Ladin, tarnished our image. Now most non-muslim think that islam promotes violence and it really doesn't. In fact the word Islam means peace in arabic. I still don't understand why terrorist groups and terrorist people kill innocent life's in the name of islam. I really hate and it angers me that they kill innocent life's, and they kill both muslims and non-muslim. So due to those reasons, many people hate islam and it's symbol isn't recognized very much. I also put the Masjid in my piece and the Masjid is the place where muslims go to worships. People also don't know that we have a place of worship. I've been asked if I worship my hair because I cover my hair all the time, but thats not the case. In conclusion I made this art piece so that people can know a little bite more about my religion and culture.
Reflection
Overall this project was fun for me. I enjoyed print making and it was a new experience. At first I had difficulties with coming up with a print to make with symbolism but over time that issue resolved itself. I'm looking forward to making dry point because I have truly enjoyed this print making process, i'll definitely do it in the future for fun reason. Next time I wish I started the process earlier because it took me a while to finish because there were many messed up prints that I had initially but finally there was a perfect print. In conclusion, even though the prints were stubborn and wouldn't cooperate with me sometimes, I still loved working on the block print. I hope I have the opportunity to do this in the future.
