Title: Roots
Medium: Block Print
Size: 23cmx15cm
This is a piece I created using ink on paper. My intention for this piece is to make people aware of the importance of tree. Most people don't really care about nature and trees are one of the biggest victims of negligence by humans. I wanted people to know how dried up and sad our trees are getting. I got inspired by the german expressionism movement and a bit from Dr. Seuss's the Lorax because of it's message. This tree is suppose to symbolize how the trees of the world are slowly detrioting and that humans all over the world should take notice.

Process
First, I started by brainstorming. I drew a few planning sketches that I wanted to print. As I was drawing I wanted some certain aspects of the tree to be prominient. Features such as roots and curled branches were crucial for the tree I wanted. I first printed a normal looking tree with roots but I thought that the tree was too basic. So I decided to start over and print a new tree. I combined two of my planning sketches.
At first I just wanted to do roots for the block print but I changed my mind because I thought I neede to add more details.

I attempted to do multiple trees but I didn't like how they looked. They looked odd to me and they were plain.

This doesn't even look like a tree. It has the curly branches I wanted but it looks odd.

Artist Inspiration
For this project I have an odd artist inspiration. I was watching the Lorex by Dr. Seuss and I realized I really wanted to do a piece on tree conservation. Dr. Seuss's trees on the Lorex are very whimsicle and I wanted to make my tree have that effect. So thats why I changed my original print into a different looking tree. So I was intially inspired by Dr. Seuss's The Lorex to do a project on tree conservation. The style and technique were inspired by the german expressionism movement. I picked this dark movement because It fits the theme I was going for. I wanted to make the visual of the tree to be dark and the german expressionism is known for it's dark art. I thought that picking the block print as my mediumwould help out with catching the viewers eyes.
Meaning
I created this piece because nature is important to me. I geniounly love trees and people don't take care of tress. Trees are one of a world's most vital assets. Trees contribute to the beauty and character of the landscape of the world. As important as trees are, their survival is often threatened by development. For instance, developers commonly clear-cut building sites to make construction faster and easier. Millions of trees are needlessly destroyed in this way each year, because many communities do not have strong tree preservation organizations. Trees do many things for the world including, Trees help purify the air we breathe by absorbing pollutants, trees increase property values and improve the tax base in communities, and finally Tree shade, properly placed, can save an average household up to $250 annually in energy costs. All these benefits come with protecting trees and I wish humans knew of the importance of trees. The world needs trees and each year humans destroy many. The main message is to keep our trees alive because they're dying. That's why my tree looks sad and the branches are curled up. The roots are starting to curl up too because their about to give up too.
Act Question
1) Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
My inspiration inspired me to dedicate this project to tree conservation and to give the tree the look it has.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
the german expressionism movement is meant to showcase dark and sad artwork and wanted that dark for my tree.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I learned how vital tree are to our world and how we take them for grant it.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea of my research was to discuss and understand the affects humans have on nature and to focus the attention on trees.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Some inferences that I made while reading my research was how you can find inspiration in the weirdest places.

Reflection
This project was simple because it was block printing. I'm very familiar with block printing and I didn't have much difficulties doing this, however coming up with the idea was difficult. I didn't know who I wanted to use as my inspiration and when I did come up with it I didn't think it was a crediable artist. I thought that doctor Suess was not a real artist that I could use in art class because we've never really learned about him in art. But I remebered that I could use any artist inspiration for this year since we are seniors. So I decided to use dr. seuss as my inspiration. I've had an easy time doing this project and I liked it.
